With INNO-Fiber, Innoform Coaching GmbH is launching a new conference series dedicated to the opportunities and challenges of fibre-based packaging materials. The inaugural event will take place on 15–16 April 2026 in Osnabrück, Germany, bringing together experts from the packaging industry, brand owners, converters, recyclers and the retail sector.
The first conference will be held under the theme “Functional Papers for Packaging Applications.” Key topics include barrier performance, sealability and mechanical strength – all essential factors for high-performance paper-based packaging solutions.
Functional paper materials and advanced coatings
The aim of the new conference series is to connect technological developments with practical industry experience. Experts from industry and research institutions will present approaches to functional paper materials that are increasingly discussed as alternatives to plastic-based packaging structures.
Particular attention will be given to innovative coatings, additives and novel paper structures designed to enhance the performance of fibre-based packaging. Topics include the development of barrier properties against oxygen, grease and water vapor while maintaining recyclability.
Regulatory requirements and circular economy aspects will also be addressed. In light of evolving European packaging regulations, the development of materials that combine high functionality with recyclability is becoming increasingly important.
“Paperisation” as a key industry trend
One of the central program elements of the inaugural INNO-Fiber event will be a discussion on the growing trend of “paperisation.” This concept refers to the increasing substitution of conventional packaging materials with fibre-based alternatives.
The discussion will explore the technological drivers behind this trend, potential application areas and the technical limitations of paper-based solutions in demanding packaging applications.
In addition, speakers will present insights into alternative fibre raw materials such as Silphie fibres, which may contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of packaging products. The program also includes a comparison of different barrier coating technologies, including multi-layer curtain coating and five-layer extrusion processes.
Industry networking and site visit
The two-day event combines technical presentations with opportunities for networking and knowledge exchange. On the second day, participants will visit the Osnabrück site of the specialty paper manufacturer Felix Schoeller Holding GmbH & Co. KG.
The visit will provide insights into applications and developments in functional specialty papers used in packaging. The conference program also includes informal networking formats, such as an evening reception and industry gathering.
A platform for practical innovation
According to the organiser, INNO-Fiber aims to establish a platform for professional exchange on fibre-based flexible packaging. The goal is to connect stakeholders along the entire value chain and to discuss practical solutions for more sustainable packaging concepts.
The participation fee for the on-site event is €1,490 and includes conference materials, catering, a shuttle to the Felix Schoeller facility and an official certificate of participation. A livestream option is also available for €799, including access to the recorded sessions after the event.
The conference will take place on 15 April at the Hotel Remarque in Osnabrück, followed by the site visit to Felix Schoeller on 16 April.
