Beontag, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of self-adhesives and smart tags such as RFID and NFC, has announced the launch of Steelwave Edge, the latest addition to the company’s on-metal RFID portfolio. Featuring support for Impinj Gen2X, Steelwave Edge was engineered to bridge the gap between performance and cost, offering a versatile mid-range solution for the most cost-critical applications.
“Beontag has more than two decades of experience in on-metal RFID tag development, across different markets,” said Thiago Horta, VP of Digital Transformation Enablers at Beontag. “Steelwave Edge represents the latest chapter in this long-standing expertise to further expand performance, reliability, and scalability for our customers’ evolving operational needs.”

Designed for versatility
Steelwave Edge’s long-term adherence to metal and its availability in 4 sizes allow a broad range of applications, such as automotive parts tracking and inventory control, offering reliable solutions from large-scale deployments to everyday asset tracking.
Powered by the latest Impinj M830 IC with Gen2X
Steelwave Edge uses the latest Impinj M830 IC with support for Gen2X, an enhancement to the radio and logical layers of the Gen2 RAIN RFID protocol that increases tag read range, inhibits tag and item counterfeiting, and reduces solution cost.
“Metal has historically been a challenging material for RFID tags, and Impinj developed Gen2X to improve tag readability and performance on and near metal surfaces,” said Martin Liebl, Senior Director, Endpoint IC Product Management, Impinj. “As a pioneer in metal-mount tagging, Beontag’s new Steelwave Edge showcases the capabilities of the Impinj M830 endpoint IC with support for Gen2X, delivering the fast, reliable reads required for large-scale on-metal deployments.”
Qualified printability
Verified with leading printer manufacturers, Steelwave Edge provides dependable print quality, making deployment fast and effortless in complex labelling environments, helping maximise productivity while minimising printing errors.
“Steelwave Edge’s consistent radio frequency behaviour eliminates common cross-encoding issues, yielding perfect, hassle-free results on TSC RFID printers”, said Chris Brown, RFID Program Director at TSC Printers. “Beontag’s latest on-metal tag masterfully combines cost-efficiency with premium material quality and construction.”
